“Star Daisy” (SAGAN)
Affinities and Rabbit Holes:
The nature of space, Pioneer 10-11’s Plaques, and Voyager 1’s Golden Record.
Honda: The Power of Dreams
“Pioneers 10 and 11 both carried small metal plaques identifying their time and place of origin for the benefit of any other spacefarers that might find them in the distant future.
The golden plaque was the brainchild of Carl Sagan who wanted any alien civilization who might encounter the craft to know who made it and how to contact them.”
Taken from NASA, JPL
“Pioneer Plaque”︎︎︎
“With this example before them, NASA placed a more ambitious message aboard Voyager 1 and 2, a kind of time capsule, intended to communicate a story of our world to extraterrestrials.
The Voyager message is carried by a phonograph record, a 12-inch gold-plated copper disk containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth.”

“The Golden Record”︎︎︎
JOYCE:RE:
To make an artifact that stands the test of time- with the intention of showing that passage of time since its creation (a time capsule). Sending such evidence into a dimension as vast and as empty as space as to shout into the great void perchance to prove to some other beings that we are here, or that we were once here. A delicate balance of hope and despair lies in such an endeavor.
When learning about space, one such as myself cannot help but feel excited and yet be wrought with such existential dread for oneself and the entirety of the human race on this drifting rock we call home. The goals and the dreams we have seem to lose any significance in the face of the subject. Yet we press on. We learn what we can, we do the best we can. Like sending that Golden Record into deep space, like shouting into the great void- perchance our efforts stand long after we are gone- and the life we live is meaningful, fruitful, and fulfilling- if not for others, for ourselves. Such is the Power of Dreams.
Mixed media,
Graphite and ink on paper, 8.5”x11”
Graphite on paper, 8.5”x11”
+ Digital media, collage, colour, and type, 600 dpi
